NEW DELHI: The voting for Tripura assembly elections has started. The polls are being held for 60 seats. As per reports, the polling is taking place at a slow pace.
The fate of 259 candidates, including 22 women, will be decided today. There are 28.13 lakh voters. The ruling party BJP, is contesting in the maximum number of seats with 55 candidates. Their ally IPFT is contesting in five seats. While the CPM is contesting in 43 seats and the Congress in 13, left organizations are contesting in 4 seats, including one independent seat. Tipra Motha party will contest in 42 constituencies and Trinamool Congress in 28.
Strong security arrangements have been set up in view of the possibility of conflict. State Police Nodal Officer GS Rao said that 25,000 members of central security forces have been deployed in connection with the elections. 30,000 members of the state police force are deployed to maintain law and order. Clashes broke out in Bishalgarh and Belonia last night amid tight security.
