THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has asked for the approval of a bill from the governor to form temporary syndicates in universities. The current move is in wake of the term completion of the Calicut syndicate on March 5th.

Rajbhavan has earlier denied the request after discerning that if such a bill gets the approval, it directly takes away all the power surrounding the governor as chancellor. According to the rules, if the syndicate ends its terms, the governor can allot a temporary syndicate. However, the new bill from the government is a bait if caught takes away the power of the governor, and will give the government a free run of authority to appoint the syndicate of their choice.

According to the rules, the new temporary syndicate can assume office only if the proceedings to select the senate started 6 months before the term ends. But here, no such proceedings were recorded. In 2018, the government brought an ordinance to allow a temporary syndicate at Calicut university. The current minister R Bindhu also found a place in the syndicate back then. But now, the government is not hassling for an ordinance but is keen on a bill as the assembly starts soon.
