ALUVA: After the Valentine’s Day, the ‘Love lock’ which was seen in European countries have also become widespread on the Shivaratri footbridge in Aluva Manappuram. On the sides of the footbridge, there are several five-square-foot cabins. Over the last few days, large locks have appeared on the steel grills on the footbridge.

The number of lovers coming here and placing love locks on the bridge has increased. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials, and perhaps the date, are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away (often into a nearby river) to symbolize unbreakable love. Many people visit the footbridge across Periyar river. The lovers who visit here have started the ritual of placing love locks like the European style to strengthen their love. It has been alleged that this gesture on the footbridge is disturbing the devotees going to the temple. There are also complaints of nuisance of anti-social elements on the bridge.

The students from nearby schools and colleges also come to the area. The police intensified patrolling on the footpath behind the park as well.
