KOCHI: The contract workers who were employed in government projects are now in dire straits. The overdue from the government to these contractors has now surpassed a humungous Rs 16000 crores. KIIFB should pay the most— Rs 4500 crore. Even the process of approving the bill is getting stalled in KIIFB.
The predicaments are the same in all departments. The water authority hasn't paid the salary for work completed 15 months back. The road department is also showing similar lax when it comes to payment.
The Builders Association of India president B Chandramohan says that the government delays the salary but the GST bill comes without a miss. He is shocked when he admits that the current numbers in salary overdue are unprecedented.
Nowadays, even essential works are not able to be completed admits the contractors. The bank mostly provides discounts for the bill submitted by the contractors which help in the completion of impending works in the water and road department in the state. Meanwhile, the central government has put a ceiling on the loans to be taken by the KIIFB which has added to the worries of the contractors. So, the contractors are moving ahead with a protest in front of the AGs office on February 23rd.
