THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the Congress plenary session is set to begin on Friday in Chhattisgarh's Nava Raipur, curiosity prevails as to who will join the working committee from Kerala.
Everyone is looking forward whether Dr Shashi Tharoor will be included in the working committee. It is indicated that Ramesh Chennithala and Mullapally Ramachandran have chances from Kerala. There is pressure from A group and some MPs for Tharoor. If Tharoor is selected, then Mullapally may be considered for some other post.
Currently, AK Antony, Oommen Chandy and General Secretary in charge of organization KC Venugopal from Kerala are in the working committee. Antony and Oommen Chandy may step down. As the Disciplinary Committee Chairman, Antony may be included as an invitee. KC Venugopal will definitely be in the working committee.
The President will nominate 11 of the 23 members of the 25-member working committee, excluding the Congress president and the parliamentary party leader. 12 people should make it through the elections. Although it has been done through nominations since 2001, it is rumoured that the high command has decided to allow the elections to take place this time.
Considering the possibility of competition, there was a proposal to limit the AICC members with voting rights to the permissible membership quota of 41 for Kerala. With this, some of the current members had to be dropped. As this would lead to complaints, six of the MPs were included in the list of parliamentary party representatives and made full voting members. Thus, the High Command approved the AICC list of 63 people including 47 eligible voters and 16 invitees.
