NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi won the Delhi MCD mayor polls and was elected as the mayor of Delhi on Wednesday. The votes were counted at the civic centre. The elections, which were disrupted thrice earlier due to AAP-BJP conflict, were held peacefully this time.
A dispute broke out earlier over the voting of ten members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The election was delayed due to the dispute between AAP and BJP members. BJP candidate Rekha Gupta contested against Shelly Oberoi. Shelly Oberoi got 150 votes while Rekha Gupta got 116 votes.
Eight Congress members abstained from voting and one voted. Two independents stood with the BJP. The deputy mayor election had to be held again. Shelly Oberoi, elected mayor, will be the presiding officer in the election of deputy mayor. Aalye Mohammad Iqbal is the deputy mayor candidate of Aam Aadmi Party. Kamal Bagri is BJP's deputy mayor candidate.
