CHENNAI: A woman cop shot at a criminal case accused when he tried to escape. The incident happened at Ayanavaram in Chennai. The 22-year-old accused identified as Suryah alias ‘Bend’ Suryah was shot at. The inspector Meena shot him below the knee when he tried to escape from police custody. Two cops sustained injuries in his attack. She is the first policewoman in the history of the state to open fire at a crime accused.

The police had stopped Suryah, Gautam and Ajith Sunday morning at 4 am on Konnur Highway in Chennai during a vehicle check. The three then beat inspector Shankar with an iron rod and later they escaped on a two-wheeler. The police had the other day arrested Gautam and Ajith.

After receiving information that the third suspect Suryah was at his relative's house in Tiruvallur, a police team reached there yesterday morning and arrested him. While taking him to the police station, the accused wanted to attend a nature’s call and the vehicle was stopped on the roadside for him to urinate. While returning he ran towards a sugarcane shop and got hold of a knife and attacked the cops Saravana Kumar and Amanuddin. When he tried to flee after the attack, Meena first fired in the air as a warning and when he tried to attack her, she shot him below the knee. The two cops and the accused were taken to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment. Suryah is an accused in 14 cases including murder attempt, mobile theft, snatching chains etc.
