KOLLAM: There was a stray dog named Appu in Kuthirapanthi Market of Thazhava panchayat. He wasn't any other dog for the locals here and they treated him dearly. He died on Friday, leaving the people here in deep sorrow. Appu loved them unconditionally and people paid their last respects to him with more respect than a VIP would get.
Appu, a darling of vendors and locals, went missing early this morning. He was found dead following a search by the locals. The cause of death was a viral infection of the brain. Appu was taken to the vet two days after he had discomfort in his ears. The doctor had warned that he has an ear infection and it might affect the brain. Medicines were given but they could not save his life.
Following the news about his death, the entire locality went into mourning. People thronged the place to catch a glimpse of the deceased canine. There was also an announcement, similar to when important people die. The locals decided to pay their last respects to Appu in a way he deserves for the unconditional love he showered upon them. In front of the library near the market, they lay his body on top of a white cloth and covered him with silk. People, including small children, came to offer floral wreaths. Finally, Appu bid adieu after receiving tributes from his beloved humans. Locals have decided to build a 'smriti mandapam' (memorial) in memory of Appu.
Appu came to Kuthirapanthi Market six years ago. He soon became dear to the vendors and locals there. In a market with no CCTV and no guards, he was the watchdog. He survived on food given by traders and locals. Appu was a nightmare for thieves, but he never attacked other people.
