THRISSUR: With the increase in accidents and traffic violations, the Motor Vehicles Department will continue to conduct extensive inspections to ensure safety and discipline on the roads. There will be measures including suspension of driving license for serious violation of the law.

Later, to withdraw the suspension, awareness classes and compulsory social service will be implemented, the top officials of the Motor Vehicles Department said yesterday. Line traffic signal violations, overload, etc. are extensively checked. The special drive which started on Wednesday will continue till Saturday. The entire enforcement officers of Thrissur and Palakkad districts are attending the inspection.

After distributing leaflets to drivers about line traffic, signal violations, etc., 432 vehicles were checked on the first day and fined for the irregularities found. State-level campaigns have been launched since last month when reckless driving has been found to account for 65% of all accidents and 55% of deaths in the state.
The inspection conducted by the Motor Vehicle Department found many traffic violations such as signal violations, and parking on the zebra line. Deputy Transport Commissioner MP James inaugurated the special drive near Paliyekkara toll plaza. Enforcement RTO KK Suresh Kumar, Joint RTO TN Sivan, K Rajesh, KA Raju, and others led the drive.

Overloaded vehicles as well

Action was also taken against overloaded vehicles yesterday. Complaints were raised from some districts that officials of various departments were receiving bribes for carrying excess weight. After that, vigilance also conducted lightning checks in the entire state. Last month, the lightning action of vigilance came at a time when the government was losing billions of rupees in terms of GST and royalty alone.
