THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister Antony Raju defends limiting concession to students at KSRTC. The minister said that only deserving people will get relaxation and he supported the age limit.
"Students don't worry. Those studying in unaided institutions will get a 65% concession as per the new norms. There is a valid reason for the age limit. The age limit was introduced to prevent misuse of the concession by those working in private institutions and studying in evening classes. '- said the minister.
KSRTC's move to no longer grant travel concessions to students above 25 years of age and college students who are children of parents who pay income tax was controversial. After this, private bus owners also came forward against free travel. Student organizations also came forward with opposition.
KSRTC currently provides completely free travel for students up to Plus Two and concessional travel for other students. As per the new guidelines, BPL students in private schools and colleges will get a concession in fare. A travel concession of 30 percent of the fare for private school students will be provided. No relaxation for students above 25 years of age. The guidelines also state that if the parents of students studying in the college are income taxpayers, they will also not get a travel concession. The corporation meeting to be held on the first day will discuss this matter.
