THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A student, who was waiting at the bus stop to return home after the NSS camp in the college, was taken into custody by the Venjarammoodu SI for no reason and brutally beaten up at the station. The incident that occurred on February 22 came to light at a time when the government has been reiterating that it will not tolerate criminals in police officers and custodial torture. An audio recording of the policemen verbally abusing the student has also surfaced.
Attingal Chembakamangalam native Adithyan Suresh Kumar, a second-year BBA student of Pirappancode UIT, was assaulted by the police. He is undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital. Adithyan has lodged a complaint with SP. Attingal DySP has started an investigation. Top officials said that action will be taken based on the inquiry report.
The police took Adithyan into custody at around 4.30 pm on February 22. Adithyan was waiting at the Thaikod bus stop when the police team led by SI Rahul reached there during patrolling. When the police asked Adithyan why he was standing at the bus stop, he asked what was wrong about standing there. Irked by the reply from the student, the SI immediately took him into custody. The police then checked his bag after alleging that he was carrying ganja.
Although the student said that he was returning after the NSS camp and that they can call his teacher's phone to clarify it, the policemen shouted at him. He was brutally beaten for more than three hours in the police jeep and at the station. Adithyan was released late at night after his father reached the station. Adithyan's hearing was damaged in the beating. He suffered injuries all over his body.
