MALAPPURAM: Despite suffering from a rare disease where his bones get fractured easily, Mohammad Swalih is standing tall as an entrepreneur. This four feet tall 32-year-old is busy making cakes at home and delivering them directly to the needy on order. His wife Jaseela is the strength.
Swalih was one-year-old when his parents realized that their son was suffering disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. While his peers went to school and to play, Swalih confined his wishes and dreams to his room. Swalih's mother, who used to take care of him, died when he was 18 years old. His sister Salina also suffered from the same disease. She died of pneumonia at the age of 32.
A month before her death, Swalih's mother went to Hajj after leaving him at his uncle's home. It was during this time that he started doing all the things without help. He cannot stay in a wheelchair for long periods due to pain. He often moves in the house by crawling.
Swalih met Jaseela through a matrimonial site. Soon, their friendship turned to love. Jaseela, who knew everything about Swalih's condition, got married to him in 2020. She supported his desire to start his own venture. Following this, Swalih decided to make cakes at home and sell them. Given that Swalih has more than a million YouTube and Instagram followers, marketing the venture was an easy job. Swalih also took up the responsibility to directly deliver the cakes made by Jaseela. He delivers cakes to nearby areas by travelling in his friend Taufiq's autorickshaw. When it comes to distant places he travels in an Alto car gifted by a company.
Swalih takes up orders from Malappuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Palakkad districts. The price of custom-made cakes made by Jaseela starts from Rs 650. The couple receives around 25 orders in a month. Swalih says that his greatest joy in life is seeing his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Fathima Safiya walk.
