THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Several students were injured in a police lathi charge which attempted to quell a clash among students of Chackai ITI. The incident happened yesterday evening. Last day there was a dispute among students of MMV and the welding trade of Chackai ITI inside the college.
On Friday, another clash broke out between the two groups in connection with the dispute. Although an agreement was reached after the leaders of the student unions reached the college, a clash took place outside the college. After the college authorities informed the police, the civil police officers of the striking force team carried out a lathi charge to disburse the students.
In the meantime, a verbal argument took place between the policeman Sarath and the students. Enraged, the policeman started beating the students with his lathi. It was some fellow policemen who stopped Sarath. It is alleged that he also beat the students who were not involved in the conflict.
Abhijith, a student and SFI Chackai ITA unit president, suffered a head injury. Abhijit, who collapsed due to serious injuries, was admitted to the medical college hospital by his classmates. Apart from Abhijit, six others were injured in the lathi charge, the students said. The medical college authorities said that Abhijith's condition is satisfactory.
