KOCHI: Ernakulam district collector Renu Raj said that the fire at the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant has been brought under control and efforts to extinguish the fire will be intensified. The fire force will continue its efforts as the helicopter system was not useful, the collector said.

At present, 20 fire engine units are working at the site. In addition to this, two more fire engine units will arrive at the site. Water will be pumped from the river to try to put out the fire. This requires powerful motors, which will be delivered from Alappuzha. Kochi Corporation has been instructed to supply small diesel pumps.

"Tomorrow, residents of Brahmapuram and those living in the vicinity should not venture out during the day except in case of emergency. This is according to the instructions of the health department. Shops should also be closed unless necessary. The traders and public should cooperate with the activities. In case the fire continues to burn, the nearby hospitals have been instructed to make necessary arrangements. Instructions have been given to set up an oxygen kiosk near Brahmapuram", the collector added.
