THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mayor Arya Rajendran said that 2200 workers, including corporation employees, will be on the scene for cleaning activities on the occasion of Attukal Pongala. The post-Pongala cleaning activities will be supervised by 130 supervisory officials. 1400 people are hired from outside. As in the previous years, a system has been put in place to completely clean the city within a few hours after Pongal and dispose of the garbage properly. A place has been found for this in Enchakal and Karamana. Cleaning operations will start after 2.30 pm. As a part of cost reduction, the cooperation of various voluntary groups has also been ensured in addition to the systems of the corporation for cleaning activities. Corporation contractors, Lorry Owners and Drivers Association, Hotel and Restaurant Association, Catering Owners Association, service providers and Fig Farm Association will also participate in the cleanup. 25 tanker lorries have been prepared for supply of drinking water. After the cleaning, the main streets will be water cleansed at 9 pm. Along with cleaning, bricks for Pongala will be collected by corporation. These blocks will be distributed for house construction in various housing schemes like LIFE. After Pongala, devotees should leave the bricks in their respective places. Penalties will be imposed against those who steal these bricks and those who use them for personal purposes. A special enforcement team will be appointed for this purpose. Examination of Pongala pots: Samples collected The inspection started on the complaints that red oxide and black oxide were mixed in the Pongala pots. The mayor said that the initial complaints were baseless and then corrected that it will be clear only after the inspection. The samples were collected from 11 places. The samples have been forwarded to the NIIST lab at Pappanam for further testing. 5.16 crore spent on road renovation 5.16 crore has been spent by the corporation for the renovation of roads in the festival area on the occasion of Pongala. 16 municipal roads and 10 smart city roads have been upgraded. More than Rs 70 lakh were allocated for various activities of KSEB. Also, Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for other emergency expenses including cleaning activities. Toilet system Toilet facilities have been set up for the convenience of all who come to the city in connection with Pongala. Talks have been held with hotel and restaurant associations regarding this. Washrooms in shops and hotels in Pongala areas can be used for this purpose. In addition to public washrooms, washrooms in government offices including municipal councils can be used by the public. A bio-toilet system has also been arranged in the temple premises.
