Equal representation for every class is what makes democracy meaningful. But this is often subverted when it comes to the end results. The greatest relevance of Muslim League in Kerala is that it was able to prevent this overturn by creating and maintaining a vote bank. All political parties climb the ladder of power by creating and maintaining vote banks. It is no small matter that Muslim League was able to ensure proper representation of the community in power by following the same path. It was only because the Muslim League emerged as a political party that it was able to seek solutions to the problems of its community and others by presenting them to the centers of power.

Kerala model of Muslim League should be emulated by unorganized Muslims in other states. Even today, the Muslim community in states like UP has to beg at the doors of prominent parties to solve their own problems. There exists a situation where the members of Muslim community cannot win even in the constituencies where they have a majority of their own community. But when it comes to Kerala, despite the left wing or right wing winning, there will not be a big difference in the number of MLAs from the party called Muslim League. Whether in power or not, Muslim League has always been able to become a formidable presence in the legislature, because it has realized that the vote bank is the force that determines the course of democracy. Looking at it that way, the history of Muslim League in Kerala is unparalleled. Their leaders like CH Muhammad Koya were equally loved and respected by all the people of Kerala, irrespective of caste and creed. Leaders like State President Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal, National General Secretary PK Kunhalikutty, and State Secretary MK Muneer are those who follow that great tradition with more clarity and energy.

The Indian Union Muslim League, formed at the Muslim League Council meeting held on March 10, 1948, at the Rajaji Hall, Chennai, is celebrating its 75th anniversary of democratic politics in the same hall today. Their growth underlines the fact that they have upheld responsible politics upholding constitutional values all this time. Indian Prime Minister Nehru once criticized the Muslim League as a dead horse but the opposite happened in the politics of Kerala. No one can deny the fact that even Congress came to power in Kerala by riding on that live horse. Muslim League is following such robust activity in Kerala. While standing up for the legitimate rights of the community, it was their concern for other communities at the same time that made them deeply rooted in this land.

The Muslim League played the most crucial role in the progress achieved by the girls of the Muslim community in the field of education in half a century. It would be rare in the history of the world for another group to have made so much progress through education in such a short period of time. In the past, all the communities generally held the mindset that women are meant to take care of the household and there is no need for them to pursue higher studies. Only the Christian sects thought a little differently. The Muslim League, which was in charge of the education department in Kerala for a long time, took up the job that fully incorporated that model. It benefited the economically and socially backward children of all sections and it became a milestone for the educational growth of the state. The fact that they have achieved this great feat, by breaking even the limits of religion, is what gives them the highest gratification in 75 years.

Today only the name Muslim League can be accused of communalism. While many other parties of other names carry communalism and casteism as their secret agenda, the Muslim League does not need such a mask of hypocrisy. While standing for the upliftment of their own community, they are working to maintain perfect secular democratic values. The attitude of the Panakkad family, which is not part of the power, but continues to be at the helm of the Muslim League, gives guidance to that organization in this regard.

When the Babri Masjid was demolished, how many innocent people were killed on the streets of some North Indian cities? But no one can forget the role played by the Muslim League, its leaders, and its members in making sure that not even a minor conflict erupted in Kerala over that incident. Although the League has been severely criticized by many extremist groups in the Muslim community, it has never deviated from the path of democracy and religious harmony. As time goes by, more and more people are convinced that the league's point of view is correct.

It is also very promising that the league is beginning to change from a perspective that opposed developments as time is passing. The theme of the Platinum Jubilee Conference is 75 Years of Responsible Politics. We wish the Muslim League, which has proudly completed three-quarters of a century of activity, to advance further in the new era with new approaches.
