CHENNAI: A girl student who swallowed excessive tablets in a bet with other students died in Ooty. The horrific fate fell on Jayneba Fathima(13) from an Urdu school in Ooty. Iron Folic Acid was brought for distribution in the school which was used by the students to bet on each other. Along with Jeyneba, other students also tried swallowing tablets in excess and were admitted to the nearby hospital.
Iron folic acid supports well the brain, nervous and immune systems in students. The school brought the tablets in large to distribute among the students. However, the kids noticed this and tried a bet to determine the student who takes the most tablets as the winner. Jeyneba swallowed 45 folate tablets. She along with her friends fell unconscious and was rushed to Coimbatore hospital. Later, considering her serious situation, she was taken to Chennai but died midway through the journey.
After the incident, school headmaster Mohhamed Amin, teacher Kalaivani, health department staff Nagamani, and Jayalakshmi were suspended from service. Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin has offered a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the family of Jeyneba.
