KOCHI: The report of the high level committee appointed by the High Court stated that the waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram is inadequate and is not working as per the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board. The committee members were District Collector NSK Umesh, Koch Corporation Secretary Babu Abdul Khader, District Legal Service Authority Secretary N. Ranjith Krishnan, Local Government Department Chief Engineer KG Sandeep, Suchitwa Mission Director G Jyothish Chandran and Chief Environmental Engineer PK Baburajan.
The first meeting of the Empowered Committee formed on the instructions of the Chief Minister in the wake of the fire at the Brahmapuram waste plant will be held today at 10 am in the Collector's Chamber. Heads of various departments are in the committee.
No adequate system
1. 300 tonnes of solid waste is generated per day but only 120 tonnes is treated. Systems are inadequate.
2. Inadequate capacity of bio-waste treatment plant.
The amount of waste brought into the plant should be reduced. A large part of the building collapsed. The rest can fall at any time.
3. Existing machinery for biomining is inadequate. Segregation of waste is not as per Central Pollution Control Board guidelines.
