INDORE: The Indore Municipal Corporation has begun a drive to demolish the illegal constructions at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Indore after 36 people were killed after the stepwell roof of the temple caved in. Five bulldozers have reached the temple to demolish the illegal constructions. The demolition works are going on in the presence of the Municipal officials and the police.
Policemen from four police stations have been deployed in the region to avoid any conflicts in connection with the demolition of the illegal construction. Deputy Municipal Commissioner and District Magistrate are also present at the spot.
The tragedy took place on March 30 after the 200-year-old stepwell roof caved in. Last year, the Indore Municipal Corporation had directed the demolition of the structure citing that it was an illegal construction. However, the temple trust rejected it saying that it would hurt religious sentiments.
On March 30, the temple witnessed a huge crowd as part of the Ram Navami festival. The roof of the stepwell caved in and several people fell into the well after a large number of people stepped on it. The rescue efforts were carried out under the leadership of the police, the fire force and the disaster response force.
