KOCHI: The High Court has ordered that 25 percent seats in Class 1 and pre-school admissions in unaided schools should be ensured for economic and socially backward students. The government’s guidelines to implement this provision must be strictly followed. The division bench comprising of Justice S Manikumar and Justice Murali Purushothaman also directed the director general of General Education department to ensure this.

The order is declared on a petition filed by Thrissur native TN Mukudan seeking reservation for students facing adverse situations.

25 percent reservation for such students is cited in Section 12 (1) (c) of the Right to Education Act. n 2013, the government issued guidelines for this.

Children with disabilities, orphans, students with learning disabilities, kids of HIV-infected people, and HIV-infected students are among the marginalized groups.

Guidelines

*1:1 ratio to be followed while providing reservation to students from marginalized sections and those facing adverse situations.

* If there are no students in any particular category, then other categories can be considered.

*Students who get reservation should not be treated differently.
