KOZHIKODE: Shahrukh Saifi of Uttar Pradesh, the accused in the Elathur train attack case, has been arrested. He was arrested from Maharashtra by a special investigation team from Kerala. It is reported that he was arrested from a hospital at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. The police arrested him when he ran seeing the police.
Investigation was intensified in Delhi in connection with the case. As part of it, four police officers from Kozhikode had left for Delhi. The Anti-Terrorism Squad and the Railway Protection Force were also investigating in Delhi and Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
A passenger on the Alappuzha-Kannur Express train set fire to his fellow passengers at around 10 pm on Sunday night. The information that came initially was that there was a fight between the passengers in the D1 compartment and after that one person threw petrol and set his fellow passenger on fire. The incident happened at Elathur in Kozhikode.
Nine including women sustained injuries in the attack. Those injured are admitted at Kozhikode Medical College and private hospitals. Three people went missing and they were later found dead. The dead have been identified as Noufeek, Rehmath and her niece Sahra, natives of Mattanur. It is believed that they may have jumped from the train after seeing the fire.
After setting fire to the train, the accused fled from the spot. A phone and some notes were recovered from the bag believed to have been left behind by him. His phone was last used on March 30. Some contradictory things like reduce use of tobacco products, spend less money, goals to be achieved in life and names of various places were written in the book. Some names were also written in some places of the book. The name ‘Noida’ was written in one page. The police had released a sketch of him.
