THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rains are likely to continue in the state for four more days. The Central Meteorological Department has predicted that isolated places will receive rain with thunder and lightning. However, when compared to previous times, the summer rains in the state were less this time. The Meteorological Center clarified that only 37.4 mm of rain was received where 42.9 mm of rain should have been received.
Two deaths were reported in the rains that lashed yesterday. A tree fell on top of a scooterist at Adoor Choorakode in Pathanamthitta. The dead is Manu Mohan (32) of Nellimugal. Lalitha Kumari (67) of Inchakkad died after a rubber tree fell on top of her.
There have been extensive damages due to the rain in South Kerala. The MEMU train from Kollam to Punalur and back was canceled after trees fell on the track between Kottarakkara railway station and Avaneeswaram. Madurai and Guruvayur trains were halted at Punalur. Trains left late after removing the trees.
Many houses were destroyed in the strong winds. Electric posts fell and power was snapped. Agricultural crops were widely affected by rains. Electronic items were damaged in the lightning. The houses of many were damaged. Minister K N Balagopal visited the houses destroyed in the rain.
