KOZHIKODE: The police are likely to impose the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment (UAPA) Act against Shahrukh Saifi, the accused in the Elathur train attack case. The police will take a decision on this before producing him in court. The accused is likely to be charged with sections 15 and 16 of the UAPA Act. Meanwhile, the accused has been brought to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for a medical examination. A large number of policemen have been deployed around the hospital building.
Shahrukh was brought to the Maloorkkunnu police camp in Kozhikode at around 6 am today. The police will interrogate him in detail before producing him in court. Several higher officials reached the police camp for the interrogation.
According to the police, Shahrukh Saifi in his initial statement said that after setting fire to the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express train, he reached Kannur on the same train. He was hiding on platform number one when the police were inspecting the train. He told police that this was his first visit to Kerala. He also testified that he set fire to the train due to his wickedness.
The attacker set fire to the train going to Kannur from Alappuzha at around 9 pm on Sunday. Three people lost their lives after they jumped from the train while trying to escape from the fire. The suspect, who escaped from the train, was caught from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra on Tuesday with the help of various agencies.
