The Kozhikode train arson happened late into the night and eventually wrecked the senses out for the three deaths that ensued after the fire. The culprit Sharuk Saifi was successfully nabbed within a matter of days. It is quite a feat albeit the loss of life in the arson. The man eloped after the fire and was caught from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. NIA and all other central agencies craned their neck into this case after the home ministry directed them to do so. It was strange. Normally it would have been only after the local police investigation that the central agencies make approaches in a regional case. Saifi is caught but there are many questions left unanswered regarding the crime. According to preliminary reports, Saifi said he did the crime as a second fiddle to someone else. The direction came from some bigger shots. The police and the agencies are breaking all barriers to bring open any terrorist angle into this crime.
Kerala stands as an anomaly. This is a state that has a record for very low terrorist attacks in India. However, it is the same state that also is the epicenter of terrorist attacks planned even in far-off Syria or Afghanistan. In the coming days, more such details regarding Saifi reaching Kozhikode will get answered by the security agencies.
Saifi after burning down the D1 coach, escaped from the train with ease which still revolves as a mystery. The train was moving at a decent pace and if Saifi jumped for escape, he is bound to have suffered a serious injury. The agencies thus are not ruling out options for external help by someone for Saifi from the same train. The police meanwhile showed lax to act on an instant basis. Saifi reached Kannur and boarded another train with ease. Questions are also being pointed at the paltry few RPF appointed in railways stations to stop such crimes without dropping time. Surveillance systems are a mess while the government gives promises of facelifting the security apparatus to be on par with airports in the country. Trains are not even equipped with CCTVs while autorickshaws in streets are fitted with high-tech surveillance ensuring safety. Anyways, Saifi is caught and is currently under treatment for pneumonia. The wait won't be that long until the investigation team breaks the Gordian knot over the train arson.
