KOTTAYAM: Brooms of different sizes and shapes are seen almost in every shop in Kandathimavu and thus the place came to be known as ‘Broom (Chool) city. The wardis located in Neelur near Pala-Muttom road.

An idea that occurred to two natives Thankachan and Jismon changed the destiny of this place. On an experimental basis, they put brooms for sale outside the grocery shops and it was sold out soon due to high demand. With the increase in demand, they started making different varieties of brooms. Now they make at least 25 varieties.

Most of the consumers are from Kanjirappally, Idukki and Kottayam areas. The brooms cost Rs 60- Rs 125. An average sale of Rs 10000 occurs in each shop daily.

Raw materials are sourced from Thailand and Indonesia. Coconut sticks are from Alappuzha. The brooms are manufactured in Muvattupuzha. Coconut and palm fronds and stalks from Thailand and Indonesia are used. Traders say that foreign items have more guarantee. Five varieties of coconut sticks are used for this purpose.
