KANNUR: After a Class 8 student performing Agnikolam (a type of Theyyam) sparked controversy, the Kerala State Child Rights Commission took suo motu cognizance of the incident. The district police chief and the child protection officer were instructed to submit an urgent report on the incident.

Theechamundi Theyyakolam, also known as Ottakolam, was performed at Chirakkal Chamundi Kottam Temple in Kannur after 45 years. The 14-year-old was wearing only wearing just tender coconut leaves as protection from burns as he jumped over fire. Following the incident, the commission took action based on media reports.
