KANNUR: Thalassery Archdiocese Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplany said that the increasing incidence of love traps for girls is worrying. The bishop shared his concerns on these issues in the pastoral letter to be read in parish churches on Easter. Following the love traps, the bishop expressed his displeasure with the problems faced by women in the community and the dowry system. Mar Joseph Pamplany pointed out that the Supreme Court's judgment that daughters have equal rights as sons in the patrimony, has not been accepted properly by the community yet.
It cannot be forgotten that women face neglect in the church and society. Our country and culture lag behind in respecting women. The bishop also reminded that patriarchy has been strengthened in society over the years by physical strength. The illegal system of dowry exists in the community in many forms and this is disgraceful. The pastoral letter says that the idea that 'woman herself is wealth' should be strengthened and it is time to end the anti-feminist system that binds marriage.
The incidences of cheating our daughters by making them fall into love traps are increasing alarmingly. Care must be taken against this. The pastoral letter suggests that by ensuring equal rights in the property for daughters as well as for sons, extravagance at weddings can be put to an end.
