Big firms falling apart to rumbles are not new. Such firms will have an aversion to change according to today’s times or there may be some knot that remains a predicament dragging the firm to reach its nadir.KSRTC rides a similar journey teetering on the verge of a fall. Beneficial steps have gone redundant as everything brought in hits a roadblock as it will be the union workers who stymie any progress of the department.

The Sushil Khanna report to split KSRTC into different sections for survival never suited the skewed mindsets of the union workers. Fear crept in about the reforms taking away the long-enjoyed fiefdom of the left-affiliated union workers in the department. Adding to it, the department also took a Rs 3100 crore loan from the SBI bank consortium which also hindered the process of splitting the department into sections.

KSRTC now pays a wholesome Rs 30 crore on monthly basis to the banks as repayment including interest. The management now wants the government's favor in ending the loans but says if adopted the move can script an end to the stagnant and dismal performance of the public road transport department in Kerala. The government meanwhile contributed Rs 50 crore at times to meet the KSRTC deadline to banks. CM Pinarayi Vijayan however looks adamant to go in line with the Sushil Khanna report. The move to split the department into independent sections from June is the most talked about subject among the insiders in the party. It was made the main headline in yesterday's print edition of Keralakaumdi.

The department will be split into four sections. Every section will decide its working style, the move is directed to make all depots go self-sufficient in adopting to elite ways on par with the time.

The neighboring states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were times ahead in adopting the reforms to split the department into independent sections. In TN, women can travel free in an ordinary bus while Kerala still lingers with high costs and zero profits. People in lakhs favor KSRTC to travel on a daily basis. Every move made should be not just aimed at profits but should also have in mind the people who make the firm run.
