MALAPPURAM: A woman gave birth near the urinal in Tirur district hospital. The newborn fell to the ground after detaching from the umbilical cord and sustained severe head injuries. The baby was shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College after suffering a fractured skull and blood clot in the brain. The child's parents filed a complaint with the Health Minister, pointing out that the incident happened due to the negligence of the staff.

The wife of a native of Unniyal Thevar Kadappuram had to go through this unfortunate event. The incident happened on last Thursday afternoon. The woman, who was seeking maternity treatment at the district hospital, was scheduled to give birth on Friday. She came to the hospital at eight in the morning, a day in advance, due to excruciating pain. At around 8:30 am the doctor diagnosed and informed that the uterus has not dilated. She started getting labour pains by 10 am. Despite informing the nurses on duty several times, they gave a cold response that it was not time yet. Unable to bear the pain, the woman went to the urinal near the delivery room to urinate. The mother-in-law noticed the signs of labor when the lady was coming out of the urinal. When the nurses on duty were informed about the situation, they responded harshly. The nurses did not move a muscle even after they were informed that the dress is getting soaked in blood. Later, while asking her to change her clothes, the woman gave birth when she standing upright.

Relatives also alleged that the baby was admitted to the ICU but an adequate diagnosis was not provided. They were not even ready to show the child to the relatives. After repeated requests, the baby was brought to the mother for feeding and then immediately taken for an X-ray. The relatives were informed that there was nothing problematic seen in the X-ray but after an argument with the hospital officials, the doctor was called in and a scan was performed late at night. The child's skull fracture and blood clot in the brain were found in the scanning report and the baby was immediately referred to Kozhikode Medical College. The child is in the NICU there now and the mother has no major health problems.
