THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More than five lakh traffic violations per day are being detected through the trial run of 726 artificial intelligence (AI) cameras installed across the state by the Motor Vehicle Department. The trial run has been going on for more than a month.
The government exchequer will receive crores of rupees when the Motor Vehicle Department starts imposing fines from April 20. It will receive Rs 25 crores each day if the MVD imposes an average fine of Rs 500 for each traffic violation. Fines will be imposed 24 hours a day. 88 cameras installed in Thiruvananthapuram city are detecting half a lakh law violations daily.
The cameras were installed at a cost of 232.25 crores. MVD has to pay Keltron Rs 3.5 crore every three months for connectivity, data analysis, staff and solar power system to operate the cameras and Rs 8.5 crore for installation of cameras. After reviewing the camera footage, Keltron will compile the fine, which must be approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles' enforcement section. No manipulations can be made. Violations within 800 meters of the camera will be caught.

2. The face and number plate of those not wearing seat belts will be visible
3. Visuals will be recorded even if backseat passenger does not wear helmet
4. Cell phone use and speeding while driving will be caught
5. Insurance and registration documents will be checked in VAHAN software and fined
