THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The transport department is planning to allow a maximum speed of 80 kmph for transport buses and 100 kmph for cars on four-lane roads. This proposal is in the draft report of transport reforms to be implemented in the context of widening roads. More studies will be done on this.

The speed of the bus is being increased considering the demand of KSRTC to increase the speed of long-distance services, including inter-state, to 80 kmph. Transport buses can travel at 70 kmph on four-lane roads but are limited to 60 kmph by the speed governor. In the meeting of the motor vehicle department, a proposal was made to increase the speed of the speed governor to 70. For inter-state services, this will be 80 km on four-lane roads and 70 km on other roads. The current allowed speeds will continue on city roads.

The proposal is to increase the maximum speed of cars to 90 and then 100 on four-lane roads. At present, the speed can be up to 90 km/h on a four-lane highway, but it is prohibited to exceed 80 km/h in many places. If it goes beyond 80, a fine of 1500 rupees is imposed. At present, the country's six-lane roads allow speeds up to 100 kmph.

Service road for bikes

A proposal is also being considered that two-wheelers should avoid the four-lane road and instead use the service roads on the sides. This can cause a huge outcry. The service roads of the almost-completed Kazhakootam-Karode four-lane stretch from Vazhamuttam to Karode have major ups and downs, which makes driving difficult.
