THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the temperature soaring in the state, the daily power consumption has crossed 100 million units for the first time. The power consumption was 100.30 million units on Thursday. The previous record was 92.9 million units used on April 28, 2022. Average daily consumption is 68 million units.

The consumption during the peak time in the evening also increased to 4903 MW. It was 4385 MW on March 28, 2022, an increase of 518 MW has been reported. If the current situation continues, additional power will have to be procured from the power exchange at Rs 12 per unit. Restrictions have to be imposed if electricity is not supplied from exchange.

Hydropower generation 24 million units

The current demand is being met by increasing the hydropower generation to 24 million units and importing power from outside at high cost. 41 percent water is stored in dams. It can produce only 1691 million units. Last year, 1822.871 million units of electricity could be produced with the amount of water available then.

Electricity minister K Krishnankutty has advised to control the power consumption from 6 pm to 11 pm. He also stated to reduce use of electric appliances that consumes more power.
