LUCKNOW: The assailants who killed Don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed have been given to judicial custody. The two convicts were brought to the district court for the verdict. Meanwhile, the dead body was handed over to Atiq's family for burial procedures.
The shocking murder of Atiq will be investigated by a judicial commission headed by former Allahabad High Court judge Arvind Kumar Tripathi. Retired IPS Subesh Kumar and former judge Brijesh Kumar Soni are also on the committee. The report will be submitted within two months.
In wake of the murder, the government imposed a curfew in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Internet services in Prayagraj were withheld and continue to remain the same. The 17 police officers in entourage with Atiq were suspended from service for failing to shield the notorious don. The home ministry has called for a report from the UP government. The central government also proposed more army personnel presaging unrest or riots in the state.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while being taken for medical procedures near Prayagraj. The murder happened while the media was running live coverage which was seen by lakhs across Indian homes.
