students

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A proposal to stop giving two points as school weightage to students, who get Plus One admission in the same school where they studied in class 10th, is in motion. Prof V Karthikeyan Nair Committee was appointed to study the issues in Plus One admission earlier. The proposal is based on the assessment of the committee that this weightage would undermine merit.

At the same time, local weightage for children in the panchayat where the applying school is located will be maintained. Students who attend high school-only schools and get good grades are falling behind because of lack of weightage. The bonus point of two marks given to children who know how to swim was stopped last year.

No increase in marginal seats

Although it is a maximum of 50 students in a batch, the government allows marginal seats to admit more students after the admission starts. The committee proposes that no additional marginal seats should be allotted in the current higher secondary batches There is also a proposal to reduce the number of batches that do not have enough children in the respective districts and allow more batches where it is necessary. However, teachers are of the opinion that reducing the batches in southern districts due to an insufficient number of students will make it difficult to get admission in rural and tribal areas. National Informatics Center, which has developed a single window software to solve allotment-related issues at various stages, will discuss with the experts. The final report of the committee will be submitted to the government within two weeks.
