KHARTOUM: The body of Albert Augustine (48), a native of Alakode in Kannur shot dead in Sudan amid clashes between Sudanese armed forces and paramilitaries in Khartoum, has been shifted to the hospital. He was hit by a bullet when he was standing near the window of his apartment and speaking over phone to his eldest son Austin studying in the UK. His wife Saibella and daughter Marietta were with him, but they escaped unhurt. They are now in the basement of the apartment. They have been advised not to go out. Food is being delivered to them.
In the meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Khartoum warned the Indians of Sudan to stay indoors. They have been asked not to stand in open places like balconies. The embassy also advised them to store enough food, water and medicines.
Albert called his wife and daughter to Sudan two weeks ago to celebrate Easter with them. He was planning to come home on leave on May 3 with his wife and daughter. The shooting happened on Saturday night.
Albert, an ex-serviceman, who had served in the Indian military for 19 years, has been working as security manager at DAL Group of Companies in Sudan for the past seven months.
His wife said they have not been able to shift his body to the hospital even 24 hours after the incident. She had sought immediate intervention of the authorities.
