MALAPPURAM: No smiles happened inside the house of Mishaal. Nilambur Pothukallu native Aisum Mishaal was not even ten days into life when doctors found the veins in his liver collapsing. On the 30th day, Mishaal was subjected to surgery at Kozhikode medical college. All efforts to work on the veins between the gall bladder and liver went in vain. The newborn's belly started protruding making It painful for breathing. The doctors suggested the only option, a far possibility considering Mishal’s Father Swahal's meager earnings as a coolie— Liver transplantation.
Both parents are A-positive blood group holders. Mishaal is O-negative making it impossible for his parents to be donors. The search for a donor extended when Mishaal started vomiting blood and the hospital visits turned routine.
Finally, one friend of Swahal accepted the offer and showed magnanimity to donate liver to his friend's son. A total of Rs 17 lakhs were needed for the treatment. The amount was collected from relatives and the locals who helped the family. The surgery happened inside Aster medicity in Ernakulam.
The slow hummings of prayers from the family were heard as the surgery went successful. Mishaal smiled for the first time, says his mother Razia in tears. The kid now gleams and hums vague notes. The house is smiling, Mishaal too.
