KOZHIKODE: Mamukkoya was the flag bearer who enabled the continuity of Kozhikode in Malayalam cinema where KP Ummer, Kuthiravattam Pappu, and Balan K Nair had left a mark. Mamukkoya played a significant role in the Kozhikode slang of the Malayalam language gaining greater social acceptance.
It is a great loss to the social and cultural scene of Kozhikode when Mamukkoya, who was with us making us laugh, think, and sometimes cry, says goodbye. When film language grew out of written language, the Kozhikode dialect was adopted by the world through Mamukkoya.
Mamukkoya's style was not just about making people laugh. That laugh was closely related to life and had levels of rethinking. Mamukkoya's dialogues titled 'Thug Dialogue' have been followed by the new generation on social media as a tribute to his natural acting and dialogue delivery.
How can we forget the photographer who made us laugh in a single scene in the movie Vadakkunokkiyantram? Hamsakoya in Ramji Rao Speaking, who shouted 'Balashna Kochukalla', Kunjikadar, the pickpocket in Mazhavilkkavadi, Gafurka in Nadodikkattu, who made everyone his dosth... and so many characters. Abdu in Perumazhakkalam, showed the supporting actor in Mamukkoya.
He is well known in the city streets of Kozhikode. An ordinary man who never acted in his life. A friend who created a large circle of friends, even when he spoke what he had to say. There is no one else who can mark Kozhikode like this not only through language but also through his characters.
