Mamu Thondikodan’s childhood revolved around working at a mill in Kallayi during morning and performing in dramas at night. Mamu regularly used to watch plays in Kozhikode and perform it to his friends when he reaches home. He was active in drama during school days. Later, he became a regular performer in Carnival dramas.
“Carnival dramas did not have a proper script, just an outline with a beginning and climax. The play progresses according to the mood of the actors. Mamu usually has a small role in it. Mamu was good at making jokes. Each day’s dialogue will be different. Mamu was an expert in finding new jokes," said Wilson Samuel, one of the early theatre artists in Kozhikode.
He played the main role in the play ‘Mochanam’ written by AK Puthiyangadi and it was performed across Kerala.
Mamukoya refused to give up theatre even after he got recognized for his role as Gafoor in ‘Nadodikkattu’. Then he acted in the play ‘Superstar’ directed by Purushan Kadalundy.
“He suffered severe poverty back then. I remember what he said when he went to Gulf for a performance. I want to buy a blouse for my wife after I get money for this play.” His connections in theatre paved the way for him to films.
Mamukkoya was also able to maintain his friendship with Vasupradeep, KT Muhammad, Balan K Nair, and many others whom he met during theatre days. He was the President of the United Dramatic Academy. If he was at home, he would have watched plays wherever in Kozhikode.
