THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala’s prodigious Keltron is passing through tumultuous times. The purchasing deals and crosshairs of miring in a possible corruption scam are tainting the overall image of the state. The CIG report has found fraud in deals concerning Keltron but the government has decided to look otherwise.
Three years before, the CIG report pointed fingers at the nexus between police and Keltron officials in purchasing cameras. Many politicians were also on the beneficiary list so the better way out was to assign a namesake banal investigation led by the home secretary.
Earlier, the DGP approved the contract to place cameras on 7 tourist spots at Rs 3.21 crore. The move happened without a tender process. Later the government reduced the number of locations from seven to five, but the budget remained intact.
The government IT service is managed by Total service providers which makes it easy for Keltron to strike a contract without any necessary tender. Later, Keltron will give a contract to another private player for installing the cameras. The CIG found many anomalies in the deals between the two. According to CIG findings, the officials bought copious electronic equipment without any inspection but gave the yes nod after seeing some trite PowerPoint presentations.
