KOCHI: Even though producers' and technical experts' associations say that most of the new generation in cinema are after drugs, the police and excise are keeping silent fearing that the action will not get support from the elite. Excise knows that a young actor from Thiruvananthapuram in a leading serial is the main link in drug supply. He has his own distribution network. But the Excise officials is not daring to touch him.
Police, Excise, Narcotics Control Bureau and the narcotics division of Customs are monitoring the film industry, but the investigation does not extend to celebrities. Drugs like MDMA and LSD are in demand. The teams from Ernakulam and Alappuzha deliver to the cinema sets. Some of the drug dealers caught in Kochi two years ago were supplying only to cinema sets. The leading young director escaped just before the inspection in a Kakkanad hotel where a shooting team was staying. That day, the police nabbed the technicians and left others.
Drug menace in sets
An actor and a director got into a fight after the actor got intoxicated at a shooting location. The reason was a demand for retake of a scene. The director apologized and settled so that the shooting would not be interrupted. This is common in many sets. They will be active for up to two days without food or sleep in chemical intoxication. Then they will sleep day and night which will effect the filming and will in turn result in loss to the producer. Drugs are openly used in some sets. There are those who insist that the cost of the drugs should be paid by the producers.
