Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan-2 is running packed houses in theatres. Alas, the movie now got into the news for not any fame but for charges of plagiarism. Dhrupad singer Ustad Wasipuddin Thagar has alleged that the tune of Veera Raja Veera, featured in Ponniyin Selvan 2, is taken from his father and uncle's shiva hymn. Denying all charges, Mani Ratnam's own production house Madras Talkies came forward with an explanation.
Wasipuddin alleged that the arrangement of the song was stealthily changed or else the PS2 song echoes the version that his father along with his uncle performed for years. Wasipuddin also filed a plagiarism charge against PS2 production house Madras Talkies. Veera Raja Veera is a classical composition composed by Narayana Panditacharya in the 13th century. Madras talkies commented on the plagiarism charge as a feeble attempt to garner some spotlight.
