THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There are not enough students in 105 batches of 82 higher secondary schools, including 70 government schools. Of these batches, 90 are in 70 government schools and 15 are in 12 aided schools. This figure is in a report given to the government by the Director of General Education. Batches with less than 25 children are considered childless batches. The report recommended that each batch of 14 schools having more than one such batch should be shifted to the required areas.

Plus one admission can be amended by transferring batches before publication of the prospectus. The prospectus should include a stipulation that batches admitting less than 25 students from the new academic year will be canceled and transferred to the required area. Out of 14 such batches in government schools, four are in Kottayam and three are in Thiruvananthapuram. Two in Palakkad and one each in Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, and Kozhikode districts. Out of the 85 schools with batches with fewer children, 21 are in Kottayam, 20 are in Pathanamthitta, 15 are in Ernakulam, 12 are in Alappuzha, and 9 are in Idukki. A committee appointed by the Education Department with the former higher secondary director Dr. V Karthikeyan Nair as chairman and joint director of higher secondary (academic) R Suresh Kumar as member secretary will soon submit its report to study the restructuring of childless higher secondary batches.
