THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor and BJP leader Suresh Gopi levelled harsh criticism against the police in connection with the murder of Dr Vandana Das. He alleged that the police knowingly left Vandana to die. He also blamed the police for not having a foresight in the incident. 'If the doctor was a close relative or having a blood relation of all of the cops there, would they have stayed 50 meters or 100 meters away? If they had really thought that she was their niece (own sister’s daughter) would they have left her alone? This is what I have to ask the officers,' the actor said.

Sandeep (42) of Kudavattoor, a liquor addict was brought to Kottarakkara taluk hospital yesterday early morning, to dress his wounds. He turned violent and stabbed Dr Vandana Das, only daughter of K G Mohandas and Vasantha Kumar, to death with the surgical scissors. The police later subdued him. Sandeep himself informed the Kollam rural police control room, that he is in trouble and asked them to save him Wednesday early morning. When the Pooyappally reached his house, he was found standing in his neighbour’s house with a stick. He requested the police to take him to the hospital to dress his wounds seen in the leg. He turned violent on reaching the hospital along with his relative Rajendran Pillai and social activist Binu.

He stabbed Binu, ASI Manilal of aid post, Baby Mohanan, night officer of Pooyappally station, home guard Alex and ambulance driver Rajesh. They sustained only minor injuries. After recording the arrest of the accused, he was first admitted to Paripally Govt MCH and later to Thiruvananthapuram MCH. He was later produced in a court in Kottarakkara and remanded. An order suspending him was issued later.
