NEW DELHI: Supreme Court against the West Bengal government for banning the screening of the controversial film 'The Kerala Story'. The film is being screened in other parts of the country and nothing has happened. Why did Bengal government ban the film then, the bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha asked. The court's observation was on a petition filed by the producers of the film. The hearing of the case was adjourned to Wednesday.
West Bengal is no different from other parts of the country. Why is Bengal banning the film if it can be shown everywhere? If the public chooses not to watch the film, they will not watch it, the Supreme Court said. Then the court sent a notice to the governments of Bengal and Tamil Nadu which banned the film. Although the film was not banned in Tamil Nadu, theater owners had decided not to screen the film citing law and order issues, which the producers alleged was tantamount to banning the film.
Produced by Vipul Shah and directed by Sudipto Sen, the film is about a group of women who are forced to convert to Islam and are recruited into ISIS. The film collected Rs 80 crore in its first week of release.
