KOTTAYAM: A man, who locked his wife inside the house, managed to flee after smashing the nose of a policeman who came for the woman's help. Jibin Lobo, a senior civil police officer of Pampady station, was admitted to Kottayam Medical College with a broken nose bone and an injury on his eyelid. Sam Zakariya (42), who attacked Jibin, is an accused in several cases.

The incident took place amidst criticism that the police are not capable of preventing unexpected attacks and are not trained for it.

The incident took place at 8th Mile in Velloor in Pampady at around 10.15 pm on Sunday. Bini, Sam's wife, had called the Pampady police station to report that she had been locked up in the house following a family dispute. Soon, Grade SI Rajesh, SCPO Jibin and Homeguard Jayakumar reached the house. Sam attacked Jibin while the latter was attempting to open the door to the room where Bini was locked. The accused then pushed Rajesh and Jayakumar and fled the spot. Jibin, a native of Manthuruthyin Champakkara, has four stitches above his eyelid.

Bini got married to Sam two years ago after getting divorced from her first husband. She has three children from her first marriage. Sam married Bini on the condition that she does not bring home any of her children from the first marriage. However, problems started recently when Bini brought her third child home after the child became ill. Bini had obtained a protection order from the court preventing Sam from ousting her from his home. Sam is an accused in various cases, including a murder case.
