IDUKKI: Arikomban, tranquilised and relocated to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary from Chinnakanal, has reached near Kumily. As per the aerial distance, it is reported that Arikomban is six kilometres close to Kumily. The authorities of the forest department are closely monitoring the data from the GPS collar of the tusker. Arikomban had the other day reached Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary where it was translocated.
The rogue tusker after spreading fear entered the forests of Kerala from Tamil Nadu six days ago. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has imposed a ban on tourists in Meghamala in Tamil Nadu due to the fear of attack by Arikomban. It is still continuing. There were reports that the elephant had attacked a house there. The elephant had damaged a shed built for forest guards on Sunday. The employees fled to safety.
Even though the elephant has reached Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu is still maintaining a strong vigil in its forest areas. The team assigned for surveillance has been instructed to remain there itself. This is considering the possibility of the elephant’s return.
