India strongly condemned the malign efforts by Canadian authorities that permitted a float depicting the murder of Indira Gandhi to run through Brampton. The issue if not mollified can rupture the long-standing friendly relationship between the two countries. Asked about it at a press conference, Mr. Jaishankar hit out at Canada, saying there was a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, extremists, and people who advocate violence. The khalistani voter base enjoys large sway in Canada and it is no secret. Over the years, the leadership including Justin Trudeau has kowtowed before the extremist in exchange for political upliftment. Many provinces including Toronto and British Columbia have turned bastions for such Khalistani outrages and protests.
In a white saree smeared in blood, stood the replica of Indira Gandhi. Two Sikh soldiers are seen aiming their rifles at Mrs. Gandhi. The tableau went through the road for almost 6km. The egregious parade was part of remembering the infamous 1984 operation blue star. The umpteen efforts by the PM failed in consoling the extremist Khalistanis in 1984. It was then Mrs. Gandhi who decided to allow the army to take back control of the golden temple from khalistani fringe elements. The result was a bloodbath as many such extremists ended up in the rifles of army. The ensuing catastrophe later spiraled worse and reached the doorsteps of PM Gandhi’s residence on Safdarjung Road. The Sikh assailants had fired 33 bullets at her, of which 30 had hit; 23 had passed through her body, while seven remained inside.
The Canadian embassy in India has condemned the tableau prepared by Khalistanis, but appallingly the Canadian leadership including PM Trudeau is still schtum; yet to grab the cojones to counter Khalistanis. Almost 35% of Indians settled in Canada are Sikhs. They crossed the Atlantic to reach the maple country to work for railworks. Later on, Hotel businesses were started by many Sikhs which prospered immensely. During the Punjab riots of 1984, the financial assistance for extremists mostly came from Canada.
Even during the 2020 farmer's protest, the Sikhs for Justice group was constantly under the radar of central agencies for financial aid to extremists. The group got banned in India soon, but it is worrying nevertheless since a major number from the Sikh diaspora in Canada vow to a separate country of Punjab rather than confounding with India. The authorities in Canada are enjoying radio silence over the issue. It gives a wider picture of how the touted Trudeau administration is nothing but a puppet in the hands of such extremists. S Jaishankar's intrusion in the case is commendable, as he acted caring less about the political differences ensuing between Congress and BJP but the sovereignty of the nation.
At his press conference, Mr. Jaishankar said, "Frankly, we are at a loss to understand other than the requirements of vote bank politics why anybody would do this...I think it is not one issue, no matter how egregious it may be. I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence."
