MUMBAI: Police registered a case against one man who changed his WhatsApp profile photo to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The accused is a worker in a mobile company in the metropolitan city of Mumbai.

It was Amrajith Surve who reached the police with a complaint about a man hurting his religious sentiments by uploading images of a Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who was deemed theocratic and the mainspring behind several mass murders of olden times. Amarjith requested the man to change his whatsapp profile photo but the plea went on deaf ears. Even after hours, the photo remained intact, thus forcing Surve to reach the police for help. Surve is a member of an extreme right-wing Hindu nationalist group. The police have not yet arrested anyone in the case but have charged sections including hurting religious sentiments, and deliberate instinct to create riots.

The Hindu groups in Maharastahra already warned people to not use images of Aurangzeb or Tipu Sultan on social media since it was considered demeaning to fellow Hindus in the state. It was just days before that a big riot took place in Kolhapur after somebody eulogized the former Mughal emperor on social media. A curfew was imposed and Muslim homes were attacked by right-wing Hindu extremist groups in pure daylight.
