KOCHI: It took 24 hours to implement the Supreme Court order quashing the appointment of Rekha Raj, an assistant professor at Mahatma Gandhi University and a Dalit-feminist. A replacement was also appointed immediately. However, around 20 people are still waiting since the Supreme Court order of May 19 which canceled anti-reservation appointments at Calicut University came out. Dr. KP Anupama from the Ezhava category, Dr. TS Shyamkumar and SS Tara from the Scheduled Castes are among them. As Anupama is the one who won the Supreme Court verdict, the university is in the process of appointing only her. In the rank list for the Sanskrit department, Shyamkumar, who has authored ten books, is ranked first in the Scheduled Caste category. He has also received three awards from Calicut University for best research paper.
They are the victims of the reservation scam in the rank list of 63 assistant professor vacancies by creating new turns in rotation for differently abled reservations. Dr. Anupama, a native of Malappuram, approached the High Court as she did not get the Ezhava reserved appointment despite having the second rank in the Journalism Department where there were two vacancies. The High Court ordered the appointment of Anupama. The Supreme Court also dismissed the university's appeal. The university contended that only differently-abled persons were eligible for this turn and that no such applicants were received and hence no appointment was made.
54 persons in the rank list were appointed. It is indicated that 24 people including those who got reservations are ineligible. Nine posts are vacant. 15 people who missed the opportunity have approached the High Court. The plan is to suspend the unqualified and appoint the rest if they come with the order. The first meeting of the new syndicate is likely to take up the matter on June 16.
'This is a major submersion of reservation policy. The notification was made without following the reservation policy. The reserved posts were decided later for the candidates of interest by CPM.'
