THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of General Education has transferred 46 Malayalam teachers who have less than seven periods a week in higher secondary schools to other schools with heavy workload. This is based on the June 2017 order amending the order to create additional posts for additional periods. With this, 46 Malayalam teaching posts have disappeared at once.
Those who take classes for 1 to 14 periods per week are considered as higher secondary junior teachers and those who take classes for up to 24 periods are considered as senior teachers. Apart from this, a junior post was also created for three additional periods. By the order of 2017, it was amended that guest teachers can be appointed for additional periods of one to six periods and a junior teacher post can be created for seven or more periods. The present action is based on the report submitted by the Joint Director of Higher Secondary Academic regarding the information of teachers with fewer periods.
There are complaints that even teachers with six periods have been transferred. Temporary teachers will be appointed instead of junior teaching posts in these schools. Teachers' organizations complain that nine Hindi teaching posts have been removed in this way. KHSTU General Secretary Panakkad Abdul Jalil said that there is no justification for the government's action. AHSTA General Secretary S Manoj accused the Left government of implementing the central government's policy of making temporary appointments for financial gain.
